Schools review list is drawn up
A list of Shropshire primary schools which could close as part of a major reorganisation is being drawn-up.

But the names of the shortlisted schools will be kept confidential while councillors discuss what action to take.

Shropshire County Council has published an 11-stage plan which will be used to reorganise its 141 primary schools.

Education officials claim change is needed because of declining pupil numbers and funding pressures.

Children withdrawn

The first stage is to identify which schools might be closed or merged.

Head teachers, county councillors and governors will be told.

But the council claims the information must be kept confidential at that stage because it could put schools in jeopardy if parents start to withdraw their children.

Individual schools will only be publicly identified at the next stage, when "formal consideration" is given to closing them.

Under the new policy every primary school should have a minimum of four classes.

However, every house in rural areas of Shropshire must still have access to a school within six miles.
