Charles Darwin festival a success

Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury in 1809
A Shropshire town's commemoration to one of its famous sons has been declared a success.

The Darwin Festival was celebrated in Shrewsbury throughout February, with concerts, talks and exhibitions to honour Charles Darwin.

A Shrewsbury and Atcham council spokesman said more than 50,000 people came to see a Galapagos Islands exhibition staged in a shopping centre.

The naturalist was born in Shrewsbury on 12 February 1809.

He spent his early years in Shrewsbury and returned to the town following the Voyage of the Beagle - his trip around the world between 1831-36.
