Thomas Telford was Shropshire's first county surveyor
Celebrations are due to start next month in Shropshire to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of the civil engineer Thomas Telford.

He left a legacy of roads, canals, bridges and churches throughout the country.

A year of events is planned, starting with a concert at Abraham Darby School, Madeley, Telford, on 20 January.

Another highlight is a Thomas Telford themed civic service at St Michael's Church, Madeley, on 22 July.
