Farmer gives up on dairy income
A Shropshire dairy farmer is selling his entire milking herd of 86 cows at auction because of concerns at the depressed state of the milk market.

Ralph Tomley, whose family have worked at Daywell Farm near Gobowen since the early 1900s, is turning his attention to other ways of making a living.

Two years ago he opened a golf course on 130 acres of his land which later won an environment award.

But he said it has become too difficult to make dairy farming pay.

As well as his herd of Holstein and Friesian cows he is also selling a four-year-old pedigree Hereford bull and a milking parlour.
