Shrews stadium plans are approved
Gay Meadow during flooding
The pitch near the River Severn has flooded regularly
Councillors have approved plans to demolish Shrewsbury Town Football Club's Gay Meadow ground and build more than 150 new homes there.

Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council's decision allows the club to raise money for a stadium on the edge of the town.

A residents group in the town centre, the Environment Agency and the Wakeman School by Gay Meadow oppose the plans.

The agency is worried people may not be able to reach their homes as the pitch near the River Severn floods regularly.

Raised platforms

The plans, which received over 50 objections, were passed by the development control committee on Tuesday evening.

Developers Jennings Homes wants to build 112 houses along with 44 affordable homes.

The scheme consists mainly of town houses and apartment blocks of up to five storeys high.

To prevent flooding from the Severn the ground would be re-modelled to form a series of raised platforms.

A covenant, relating to provision for leisure use, currently protects Gay Meadow from development but senior councillors are due to decide on that issue later this month.
