Cash boost to buy famous landmark
The Wrekin
The consortium wants the public to find 1m to conserve The Wrekin
Efforts by a consortium to raise money to buy Shropshire's famous landmark The Wrekin has got off to a good start.

The group led by the Shropshire Wildlife Trust, has raised around 20,000 so far.

They will know by Tuesday if they are to receive more than 300,000 in lottery cash.

The Wrekin, a hill which covers 126 acres and boasts a 1,334-ft high peak, was put up for sale for 500,000 by landowner Peter Holt in June.

John Hughes, development manager of the Wildlife Trust, says they will need more than the asking price.

He says the extra cash will be required to improve the car park and toilets at the bottom of the hill.

The consortium is appealing to the public to find a further 1m to ensure conservation of The Wrekin.
