Public and community associations in Shropshire are putting together a bid to buy part of a famous county landmark. Shropshire Wildlife Trust was chosen to lead the project to acquire 126 acres of the Wrekin at a meeting on Monday.
The land was put on the market for 500,000 by landowner Peter Holt last month.
The trust said it is now drawing up a business plan and hopes to be able to make an offer in August.
Director, Colin Preston, said: "Our intention is to acquire the site on behalf of the community.
"I am confident between us we will be able to put together a successful bid fairly quickly."
He said although they had yet to decide the value of their bid, any offer would need public help.
"It is going to need more than just the purchase value," he said.
"Management of the land into the future will probably double that figure, we will be going public with an appeal of some sort."
He said the trust would be meeting Wrekin MP Peter Bradley and the other interested parties on 19 July to discuss their plans.
