New scheme tackles drug dealers

Licensees in Bridgnorth have joined a Pubwatch scheme to crack down on drunken anti-social behaviour and drug dealers.

Offenders risk lengthy or even life bans from all pubs in the area on top of prosecution and court penalties.

Around half the town's 27 pubs have signed up and more are expected to join.

Richard Brewer, landlord at the Black Buoy Inn, in Bridgnorth, said it was a good idea.

Quiet drink

"The scheme means troublemakers will be forced to go elsewhere," he said.

"After about six months of running the scheme people will see the difference in Bridgnorth and more people will come to the area to enjoy a quiet drink."

If the scheme proves successful Shifnal and Highley could also join Pubwatch.

Police, who are co-ordinating the initiative, are monitoring its success and hope to introduce the idea to neighbouring areas.
