General Sir Mike Jackson criticised hostage Norman Kember |
Britain's most senior soldier, General Sir Mike Jackson, was expected to get a grilling on Monday evening when he addressed students at the Oxford Union. The British Army's Chief of General Staff was due to discuss Iraq and modern warfare.
Dubbed the "Prince of Darkness", he has 40 years of military experience.
He recently courted controversy by criticising British hostage Norman Kember for a "seeming" lack of gratitude to his SAS rescuers in Iraq.
He said he had been "saddened" that there did not seem to be "a note of gratitude for the soldiers who risked their lives to save those lives".
Mr Kember later spoke openly about his appreciation for the rescue.
The soldier is the latest in a long line of political leaders, celebrities and other high-profile people to speak in the 183-year-old university debating institution.
