A community village for 24 homeless people will be developed

The cash raised from "The Road To Emmaus" concert will go towards the creation of a community village for 24 homeless people on an Oxford Road site.

They will be given accommodation and "meaningful work", a spokesperson from the charity Emmaus Oxford said.

The concert will be held at Christ College Cathedral on Friday.

Ginni Dernie, Emmaus Oxford's project director, said: "The evening celebrates our recent successes and marks the beginning of our fundraising campaign.

"We hope that the money will help us achieve our goal of starting building work on the Community early next year."

Last year, a similar concert raised �50,000 in support of the project and organisers now hope to raise even more this year.

Emmaus is an international movement, which is more than 50 years old and spans more than 40 countries.

The organisation sets up communities in which the residents work to support themselves and others by recycling and selling donated goods.

There are currently 12 communities open in the UK and a number of others currently being developed.
