People urged not to pay beggars
Beggar in street
The scheme hopes to break the drugs, crime and then prison cycle
People in Reading, Berkshire, are being encouraged to donate to a homeless project rather than give money directly to beggars.

In a attempt to tackle persistent or aggressive begging, the borough council has asked residents to give money to the Reading Single Homeless Project.

The Alternative Giving Scheme offers beggars drug treatment and support.

The council and Thames Valley Police have also been using Anti-Social Behaviour Orders on aggressive beggars.

The message in Reading is clear: 'Don't give to people begging on the street; you could be killing with kindness'
Councillor Tony Page

Tony Page, lead councillor for community action, said: "The vast majority of beggars are not homeless and they need treatment - not cash.

"The message in Reading is clear: 'Don't give to people begging on the street; you could be killing with kindness'.

"Your money may go to drug dealers for heroin and crack. Please don't give to beggars, give to charity."

Nick Harborne, director of Reading Single Homeless Project, said: "People should understand change given to beggars may feed a drug or alcohol habit.

"If you give your money directly to a charity such as Reading Single Homeless Project, you will know your money will be directly helping to provide the support people need to address their addictions."
