 The amount of waste recycled has beaten government targets |
Residents have helped council waste bosses to beat tough government targets on recycling. In 2003/4, more than 68,000 tonnes of the 296,000 tonnes of rubbish collected by councils across Oxfordshire was recycled or composted.
The 24% recycling rate topped the 22% target set last year by the government.
Overall recycling increased by 20% on the previous year and has doubled since 2000. The county council is now looking to achieve 27% by next year.
The authority needs to achieve 33% by 2006 in order to win an extra �1m from the government to improve the county's recycling centres.
Adam Symons, the council's head of waste management, said: "We are really pleased that people have responded well to all our publicity.
"Next year, we have a target to reach 27% recycling and with the will of the public we can achieve this."
