 Oxfordshire already recycles more than most areas |
Waste managers in Oxfordshire have asked the government for �1m to improve recycling. The County Council wants the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to fund a plan to revamp the county's eight recycling centres.
It says the sites need a substantial investment programme in order to make them state-of the-art.
The bid was submitted last week, and the outcome will be known in the New Year.
Government targets
Currently, 20% of household rubbish is recycled in Oxfordshire, compared with a national average of 13%.
However, the council says residents have to recycle still more to satisfy government targets.
It believes the centres' services need to be improved with new technologies and recycling methods.
If the bid is successful, work is expected to start in May, with the programme completed by the end of 2005.
