'Gay marriages' at Oxford Pride

Gay partnerships are set to get the same legal status as marriage
Same sex couples will get a chance to pledge their commitment to each other in a marriage-style ceremony at the May Day Gay Pride event in Oxford.

Oxfordshire County Council is promoting its new service for same sex and heterosexual couples at the festival.

The event in Oxpens Park starts at 1200 BST and will also feature a five-a-side football tournament and the crowning of Oxford's first 'drag king'.

Other highlights will be a dog show and tug of war tournament.

Civil partnerships

Two thousand people came to the city's first Pride festival last year and organisers hope to attract double that to this year's event.

Council registrars will be there throughout the day offering advice on their newly-launched service.

Couples will be able to get advice, book their service or have their own commitment ceremony on the spot.

The commitment ceremony has been available in the city since 1 April.

The new Civil Partnerships Bill is expected to give same-sex partnerships in the UK the same legal status as marriages when it is passed next year.
