The road has Oxfordshire's highest accident rate for its type |
Campaigning cyclists have given a cautious welcome to improvement plans for a dangerous traffic blackspot. The revamp of Cowley Road - dubbed the most dangerous urban road in Oxfordshire - is part of a council safety project costing more than 1m.
Members of the Cycling Campaign for Oxford, or Cyclox, hope it will make the route safer for all users.
The road has the highest accident rate of all shopping streets in the county - with one accident every fortnight.
 | I think it has taken quite a lot of persuasion on the part of the council to make us happy |
In May, 20-year-old cyclist Emilie Harris, of Shawford, near Winchester, Hampshire, died after she was in collision with a bus on the road. Planners now aim to introduce road narrowing and 20mph zones onto the road.
Cyclox spokesperson James Styring told the BBC: "Apart from the bone that I think we will continue to pick about the inconsistency of the application of the 20mph speed limit, we're generally happy.
"I think it has taken quite a lot of persuasion on the part of the council to make us happy."
Oxfordshire County Council spokeswoman Samantha Tharme praised the cycling group for their role in bringing about the scheme.
She said: "Cyclox have been really, really useful in this. We've been impressed at the level of input they've had.
"It's made us look in really close detail at how the measures are going to work".
The scheme ran into criticism last month, however, when it was revealed that plans for a roundabout were dropped at the last minute.
Work on the scheme is expected to start in April next year.
