BMW has confirmed plans for a major increase in production of the Mini range at its Cowley plant in Oxford. Chief executive Helmut Panke said annual output could rise to 200,000 if the plans are approved.
Currently, BMW say 140,000 cars are being built in Cowley.
The plant took over Mini production from Birmingham in 2002 after a �230m makeover.
It is the only factory building the popular car.
In 2002, BMW sold 144,000 Minis worldwide and is on course to sell 165,000 of the cars this year.
A new convertible model is due to be launched in 2004.
Mr Panke described the Mini as "a UK manufacturing success story".
