The Environment Agency is starting a project to protect homes along the River Trent from flooding. Work on a 750,000 flood defence scheme in Beeston, Notts, will start at the end of July along the canal and river.
Nottingham experienced its worst flooding for half a century in 2000 when about 400 properties along the river were affected.
The agency said the work will provide better flood protection for more than 2,000 homes and businesses in the area.
Experts said the work should mean the area will be at risk of flooding only once every 100 years, but they warned that an "extreme event" is still possible.
The work is expected to finish by the autumn of 2005.
Plants will also be placed along the river to encourage wildlife.
