Bosses at Newstead Abbey are consulting with local groups and residents who live on the estate over the plans.

It follows instances of anti-social behaviour and the proposals would mean the abbey grounds being closed off during the evenings.

Estate managers would need to apply for permission for the gates.

Security reviews

They have come up with plans following cases of anti-social behaviour during evenings, with used syringe needles being found discarded.

General manager Gillian Crawley said it was part of ongoing security reviews.

"Security starts at the perimeter of the estate and then gets tighter and tighter when you get to the house itself," she said.

"We have a state-of-the-art alarm and CCTV security so basically we have an idea that a problem is on its way before it gets to the house."
