Abbey's ancient statue crumbles
Statue of the virgin Mary
Part of the statue on the abbey's west front has crumbled
An ancient statue at an abbey which is competing in the BBC's Restoration programme, has crumbled to the ground.

Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire is the ancestral home of the poet Lord Byron.

Managers say they noticed a section of the statue of the Virgin Mary on the abbey's west front had fallen off when they saw a photo in the Radio Times.

Gillian Crawley the Abbey's Manager says it will cost 15,000 just to repair this latest problem.

She said: "There are lots of little bits falling off all the time, that's why it's at risk.

Officials have estimated the cost of repairing the mansion at around 3m.

The 333-acre estate was given to Nottingham City Council in trust in 1931.
