Abbey's stones up for 'adoption'
Newstead Abbey

Members of the public are being given an opportunity to "own" a piece of Lord Byron's ancestral home, Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire.

In a new bid to raise funds to restore the building's west front, the abbey is giving people a chance to "adopt a stone" in the 800-year-old facade.

Each person who adopts a stone can give it a personalised message, which can be read on a special website.

Contributions start at 50 and each donor receives an adoption certificate.

The abbey could obtain further funding if it wins the BBC's Restoration contest, which starts this month.
