Water firm admits sewage damage
Allotment holder Alex Aird
Mr Aird plans to destroy his entire crop
Severn Trent Water has agreed to compensate allotment holders after sewage from a blocked pipe flooded their crops near Nottingham.

The firm admitted responsibility for the leak from a sewage treatment plant near Beeston.

About a dozen allotments were damaged in the incident a fortnight ago.

A Severn Trent spokeswoman said: "We will pay their claim in full - and have apologised to the allotment holders about the spill."

"We have no problem in settling their claim - the sewage spill was our responsibility."

Allotment holder Alex Aird told BBC News: "It is heartbreaking - it is really terrible - to think we will see all our hard work burned."

The exact amount of the compensation claim has not been revealed.

David Hayes from Broxtowe Borough Council has visited the site to offer environmental health advice to the allotment holders.

Mr Aird and his wife Jean have been tending the garden allotment at Beeston Rylands for the last 10 years.
