Gardeners' fury over sewage leak
Allotment holder Alex Aird
Mr Aird plans to destroy his entire crop
Allotment holders near Nottingham are upset after their crops were ruined when a sewage leak flooded their plots.

The gardeners in Beeston said more than 10 allotments were flooded by the blockage a fortnight ago.

Allotment holder Alex Aird said of the incident: "It is heartbreaking - it is really terrible - to think we will see all our hard work burned."

Severn Trent said it is considering a compensation claim from the allotment holders, but cannot comment further.

Lost crops

The firm recommended that allotment holders seek guidance from local environmental health officers.

"We have destroyed radishes, lettuce, sweet corn and beans ... and lots more," Mr Aird said.

He and his wife Jean have been tending the garden allotment at Beeston Rylands for the last 10 years.

"We will have to go to the supermarket to buy this stuff - and it is nothing like your own home grown stuff," Mr Aird said.

"All the produce will have to be dug up and burnt and I will sterilize it and leave it until next spring and I hope we will be able to plant it next March."
