Police chief asks for 'pub tax'
Drunk man
Nottingham is gaining a reputation for alcohol related trouble
Pubs and clubs in Nottingham may be forced to pay more towards policing the city centre at night.

The idea was put forward by Chief Constable Steve Green when he met local MPs at Westminster on Monday to get more money for the force.

The levy would be in the form of a "precept", or extra tax.

He was backed by the police authority which believes it is time Nottingham's nightspots started paying for an expanded police presence.

Police Authority Chairman John Clarke said: "We are having to deal with the residue of these premises after they have turned out at various hours of the evening and early morning.

"Some of the places, I am told, work on a sliding scale so as the night goes on they get more expensive.

"But we don't see any - not one penny comes back to policing in Nottinghamshire."
