Tour operator shuns 'crime' city
Person drinking alcohol (generic)
Trips to Robin Hood's city are suspended because of crime
A firm selling short breaks has suspended sales of stag and hen weekends to Nottingham - because of fears over safety.

Brilliant Weekends said two of their clients ended up in hospital with broken bones after a fight in the city.

The announcement came after the BBC's Panorama programme highlighted incidents of alcohol-related violence.

But other firms coming to Nottingham say the city offers a central location, with a range of hotels and activities.

We are not in the business of sending people to hospital

A spokesman for Bristol-based Brilliant Weekends said they wanted to be sure their clients could enjoy themselves without becoming a victim of crime.

Richard Dennys said: "We had one incident that was quite nasty in which a couple were sent to hospital with broken bones.

"They were very upset about it - they were set upon in the city.

"We want people to have a good time not a bad time - we are not in the business of sending people to hospital," he said.

"We sent 3,000 people there last year - but I think there is a situation in Nottingham that I don't want to make any worse."

He said the firm's decision will be reviewed in a couple of months.

We send out e-mails to clients after every weekend and the feedback is that is it is absolutely wonderful

John Healey, from the city council's Experience Nottingham organisation, said: "We are disappointed he made that decision but we have a city with a lot to offer - it is a place that never sleeps."

But he admitted that: "We do have excesses which the Panorama programme laid bare."

BBC's Panorama programme reported that the square mile in the city boasts a total of 356 bars.

Scenes in the documentary, which used the city as a case study on binge drinking, showed violence in the streets after late-night drinking.

But another tour operator that sends stag parties to Nottingham had a different opinion of the city.

Mike Woods, managing director of Freedom Ltd, said: "Nottingham is definitely in the top five locations across the UK - it is up there with Edinburgh and London for popularity.

"We send out e-mails to clients after every weekend and the feedback is that is it is absolutely wonderful.

"The people are friendly and the city has a good feel about it," he said.
