Police warning for pub landlords
Chief Constable Steve Green
Chief Constable Steve Green wants to stop binge drinking
A chief constable is promising to crack down on pub landlords who serve alcohol to drunken customers during the Euro 2004 football tournament.

Nottinghamshire chief constable Steve Green says he will take action if landlords encourage binge drinking.

He says he will not tolerate "irresponsible licensees" who encourage drunken behaviour.

He has sent a letter warning he will ask the courts to revoke the licence of offending pubs.

BBC's Panorama programme on 6 June featured comments by Mr Green on the deregulation of licensing laws.

Cheap drinks

"I think the idea that we can somehow sort of transform into a 24-hour caf culture la continental Europe isn't going to happen," he told the programme.

"I think what we're going to finish up with, if we're not careful, is a 24-hour version of what we've got now - and that is my idea of hell."

The chief constable also believes Nottingham cannot cope with any more bars.

Last year he took the unusual step of personally opposing two licensing applications in the courts.

He told BBC's Panorama: "A pound a drink, two for the price of one - this is just a blatant inducement to what is binge drinking."
