Childline petition goes to London
Volunteers from the East Midlands Childline call centre are off to London to hand in a 9,000 strong petition against plans to close the facility.

Currently five fully paid staff and around 150 volunteers run the centre, based in Nottingham.

But under the proposals, paid staff will be reduced to two, and the current offices will move to smaller premises.

The volunteers say this will not provide an adequate service for the 500 callers they get every day.

Closing date

The volunteers will hand the petition in to Childline's headquarters on Thursday.

If this is not successful, they plan to continue the fight by lobbying MPs, .

Childline is facing financial problems and says the move is part of cost-cutting measures across all its centres.

The Nottingham centre is due to close at the end of September, with no location yet chosen for its successor.
