Pub owners want beer prices raised

Several recent TV documentaries have described Nottingham as having a binge-drinking culture.

The members of Pubwatch want to scrap Happy Hour and charge a minimum of �1.50 per pint of beer in the city.

Mike Meehan of Pubwatch said: "These big promotions must stop - and I am assured by the licensing people and the police that this will work."

'No powers'

"We want to bring in a minimum price for beer to stop binge drinking," Mr Meehan said.

"Some places are selling six shots for �3 or treble vodkas for �2.50 - and people are drunk before the evening even starts.

"We have no powers to stop others - but if they are not acting responsibly they are putting their licences at jeopardy."

He suggested the current cut-rate prices of �1 per pint needs to be raised to �1.50.

Mr Meehan said he hopes the new prices can be put in place in a few weeks after consultation with other pubs and licensing officials.
