Police to combat binge drinking

Chief Constable Steve Green wants to prevent binge drinking
A crackdown on drunken behaviour and irresponsible pubs and clubs is beginning across the East Midlands.

Nottinghamshire's Chief Constable Steve Green will lead the campaign to cut down on binge drinking.

He said officers would use new powers, including on-the-spot fines, and anti-social behaviour orders without hesitation over the next eight weeks.

From Thursday, Mansfield Police will tell troublemakers to leave the town centre and stay away for 24 hours.

If they refuse to do so, they face being banned for three to five years by an anti-social behaviour order.

Pubs and clubs could also lose their licences if customers get drunk on the premises and cause trouble outside.

The initiative follows a recent television documentary which revealed late-night drinking fuelled violence in Nottingham.

The new drive is also targeting Chesterfield, Buxton, Alfreton, Derby and central Leicester.
