Man's job to look in rubbish bins
Wheelie bin
Alan Wilson will sift through people's rubbish
A council has employed a man to rummage through people's bins to make sure they are throwing the right things away.

The new job of bin inspector at Mansfield District Council in Notts has been taken by Alan Wilson.

He will join rubbish lorry crews but instead of throwing wheelie bin contents into the carts he will open them up and look inside.

He said: "This might not be everyone's cup of tea but it is actually quite a challenge."

Mr Wilson will check what residents in Mansfield are putting in their green wheelie bins and in blue recycling bins - which are for plastic bottles, glass, cardboard and cans.

The aim of his job is to improve the recycling rate of the council.

Putting the wrong kind of rubbish in bins can cause whole lorries of recyclable material being buried in the ground instead of being re-used.

Mr Wilson worked for the Mansfield Shoe Company for 29 years until it closed earlier this year. He has also been the PA announcer for Mansfield Football Club for the past 15 years.

"I am checking for contamination and when I do find anything I will advise residents of where they are going wrong," said Mr Wilson.
