Funeral held after custody death
Gareth Myatt
Gareth Myatt was pronounced dead at a hospital in Coventry
The funeral of a 15-year-old teenager from Staffordshire who died while in custody was held on Friday.

Gareth Myatt, 15, died after losing consciousness while being restrained by staff at the Rainsbrook Secure Training Centre, near Daventry, Northants.

His family have waited two months for permission from the coroner to bring his body home.

Northamptonshire Police launched an investigation into Gareth's death on 19 April this year.

Restraining hold

Gareth had been just four days into his 12-month sentence for assault and theft when he collapsed.

The teenager, from Stoke-on-Trent, was pronounced dead at Coventry's Walsgrave Hospital. A post-mortem examination proved inconclusive.

On the night he died, he was restrained by two male members of staff and their female colleague.

The Youth Justice Board said recently it had suspended a particular restraining hold pending a full review into the potential medical implications of the hold following Gareth's death.

The seated double embrace was developed specifically for use with juveniles in secure units and is also used in some local authority children's homes.
