 A post-mortem examination into Gareth's death proved inconclusive |
An MP is demanding a Home Office inquiry into the death of a 15-year-old boy at a secure training unit. Stoke-on-Trent Central Labour MP Mark Fisher has contacted the home secretary about the death of Gareth Myatt.
The teenager, from Stoke-on-Trent, lost consciousness while being restrained by three staff at the Rainsbrook Secure Training Centre in Northants.
He was pronounced dead in hospital on Monday, four days into his 12-month sentence for assault and theft.
'Totally unacceptable'
Mr Fisher said: "Since by all accounts Gareth Myatt was a very small 15-year-old it seems extraordinary that three prison officers were needed to restrain him and perhaps it is not entirely surprising that he died in that restraint.
"We need to know the circumstances, it is totally unacceptable that these things should happen in our prison system."
Following Gareth's death, a post-mortem examination was carried out at Leicester Royal Infirmary, but this was inconclusive and further tests were being carried out.
Police said results from the tests could take some weeks.
A forensic examination has also been carried out of the scene where Gareth died and witness statements have been taken from staff and residents at the centre.
Rainsbrook opened in July 1999 and has room for 67 trainees.
It is operated by Rebound, a subsidiary of Group 4, on behalf of the Youth Justice Board.
