The Duke of York joined 1,000 soldiers at York Minster on Saturday for a special service to mark the formation of the Yorkshire Regiment.

The Duke, who is colonel-in-chief of the regiment, gave a reading and was invited to sign the visitors' book.

After the service, the regiment exercised its freedom of York with a 500-strong parade through the city.

Serving soldiers and veterans marched past the Duke on the south steps of the minster.

They will be commanded by Lt Col Andrew Jackson, Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, who has just returned from an operational tour of Iraq.

The Yorkshire Regiment was formed in June 2006 from an amalgamation of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment, the Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire and the Green Howards.
