County army badge to be unveiled
Decades of military tradition are expected to come to an end in York when a new combined regiment's cap badge is unveiled in the historic city.

The region's three existing regiments are being merged to create a single "Yorkshire Regiment."

Clifford's Tower, in the centre of York will be the venue for Tuesday evening's display of military pomp.

The Prince of Wales's Own Regiment, The Green Howards and Duke of Wellington's Regiment are being amalgamated.

The move is part of a much-wider restructuring of the army designed to make it much more flexible.

On Tuesday 400 soldiers will take part in what is being described as a sound and light extravaganza to mark the unveiling of the cap badge of the new regiment - an image of which will be beamed on to Clifford's Tower.

Although the badge is being unveiled the new regiment will not officially be formed until June 2006.
