Pay-as-you-go cars hit the road

It is hoped the car club will help to cut congestion in the city centre
A car club that offers members pay-as- you-go motoring has been launched in York in a bid to cut city congestion.

A fleet of seven low-emission cars are available by the hour from six sites in the city centre in the council's joint venture with private company WhizzGo.

There are also plans to introduce more cars within local housing schemes over the next five years, the council said.

It is hoped the club will encourage those who use cars only occasionally to give up their owning own vehicles.

Cost-effective access

Members pay a 25 joining fee and then about 5 per hour for the use of a car, including insurance and some mileage.

Richard Bogg, of City of York Council, said the club would also work alongside an initiative to introduce a network of cycle hire points across the city.

"We see WhizzGo as a vital part of tackling congestion in York and reducing the demand for residential parking," he said.

"They offer practical, cost-effective access to a car when needed, complementing public transport, walking and cycling."

The launch of York's car club follows the success of similar schemes in London and Leeds.
