All our yesterdays, actors in uniform at Pickering station. |
The dark days of wartime Britain are being recreated in a North Yorkshire town over the weekend as the work of 1940s rail staff is remembered. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has transformed its stations to recapture the spirit of that bygone age.
Turning the clock back six decades the town of Pickering will host parades, while journeys on the scenic line will recreate blackouts and wartime food.
Visitors will be entertained by music and comedy from the era.
The dangers railway workers and civilians faced from air raids will be highlighted in a series of sketches.
A blacked-out local train service on the Pickering to Grosmont line will offer the chance to experience the real wartime travel experience - dark and dirty, say the organisers, "the way thing were during those years".
In the town centre, a marquee will have demonstrations of wartime hairstyles, millinery fashion, food and civil defence activities.
