The girls were at risk of hypothermia, police said

Two 14-year-old girls had to be rescued from a marsh on the Norfolk coast after getting stuck in the snow in freezing conditions.

The pair were walking a dog on Morston Marshes, near Blakeney, on Friday afternoon when they became stranded.

Police said it was fortunate that they had a mobile phone and were able to call the emergency services.

A police helicopter found the girls in the dark using a thermal imaging camera and they were airlifted to safety.

Insp Terry Lordon from Norfolk Police said it was a very dangerous situation.

It is understood the girls were shaken but otherwise unharmed.
