County ships extra salt to grit

More than a thousand tonnes of salt has been shipped into Norfolk to grit the county's roads.

Norfolk County Council has bought 1,600 tonnes of salt from Cheshire, which is being unloaded at King's Lynn port.

A spokesman for the council said the salt was to ensure roads could be gritted. So far £1m has been spent on its gritting operation this winter.

The East of England Ambulance Service said it has extra front-line staff on duty to deal with the extra calls.

The service has appealed for people to only call them in an emergency.

Bus services have seen an increase in passengers who want to avoid driving on the roads themselves.

The Met Office said the cold weather had been the most prolonged spell of freezing conditions across the UK since December 1981.

The wintry weather is forecast to continue for the next couple of weeks, with further snowfall expected at times.

Warnings of either heavy snow or ice were in place for every county in England.
