A �20m biofuels plant is to be built in Norfolk. British Sugar has been given permission by King's Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council to build the plant on the site of its Wissington factory.
The biofuels plant will process sugar beet and possibly grain to produce 55 million tonnes of bioethanol a year.
A council official said it would make a contribution to the national requirement to get at least 5% of the country's fuel from bioethanol.
The fuel could be used in vehicles and by industry or to help generate electricity.
Its also hoped the plant, near Downham Market, will create a new market for beet at a time when the price is expected to drop by 35%.
