Local authorities in west Norfolk have broadly welcomed plans for the plant at Wissington near Downham Market.

The local parish and district councils expressed concern over traffic using rat runs through local villages, but have not objected to the proposals.

Environmentalists also questioned the possible impact on wildlife of taking 20% more water from the River Wissey.

The East of England Development Agency, which sees the plant as an important step in creating a much larger UK bioethanol industry, has also supported the plans.

The agency said the project will support and develop the region's economy, create jobs and opportunities for local people.
