The closure of a Wirral meat factory has been a "disappointing" blow to the community, a Merseyside MP has said.

Ben Chapman, Labour MP for Wirral South, said the closure of the Bromborough site of Tulip Ltd would mean the loss of about 300 jobs.

A rescue plan put forward by unions after the company announced its closure plans was rejected, the MP said.

The company, which produces and packs cooked meats, will transfer the work to two of its other sites.

Mr Chapman said: "Whilst it was always going to be difficult to save all 300 jobs under threat, I am highly disappointed to hear that the factory will be closing.

"We fought as hard as we could to find a way of keeping the Bromborough site open, but Tulip have confirmed that there is no viable alternative to closure."

Franny Joyce, regional industrial organiser for Unite, added: "We have been working hard to find a viable solution to closure, and have presented an alternative proposal, but unfortunately Tulip have decided that proceeding with the closure is the only realistic course of action."
