Sliced meat firm axing 300 jobs

About 300 jobs could be lost at the Bromborough base

Up to 300 jobs are being axed by food firm Tulip Ltd - producer of pork and sliced meat products - which is to close its Wirral base.

The company, whose brands include Danepak, Stagg and Plumrose, has announced its intention to close the Bromborough business on Riverview Road.

A company spokesman said there was "no viable alternative to the closure".

The union Unite said its members were shocked by the announcement and were " angry, bitter and devastated".

'Costs reduced'

The firm will now carry out a consultation with workers and union representatives.

Tulip managing director north east, Peter Judge, said: "As a site we have been working very hard to reduce our operating costs.

"Being the lowest cost producer has never been more important."

The company had been looking at securing a long-term future for the Bromborough site, but "we cannot currently see a viable alternative to closure", added Mr Judge.

He said the closure was not a reflection on the skills of the workforce.

Unite's Franny Joyce said: "We will not take Tulip's plans to close this site lying down.

"Unite is seeking clarity on the rationale behind this decision, and an explanation as to why this factory is being closed down.

"Only two years ago this loyal workforce implemented new shift patterns that dramatically reduced costs and increased efficiency at Bromborough."
