Motorists face roadside breath tests in a bid to deter drink driving |
Thousands of motorists in Merseyside are to face breath testing as part of a month-long campaign to discourage drink driving over the festive season. Over the last three years there has been a year-on-year reduction in the number of drink driving related accidents in Merseyside.
In 2005 more than 2,000 motorists were arrested on Merseyside's roads for drink driving offences.
Merseyside Police are using images of a hearse to drive home the dangers.
Last year's campaign saw more than 6,500 motorists stopped and breath tested during four weeks.
Supt Carl Krueger said: "Our officers will be out in force spotting drink drivers at key times and key locations across the region, to ensure there is no hiding place for those who drink and drive."
National figures show that one in four road deaths involve motorists who are over the legal alcohol limit for driving.
