Michael Shields has always denied carrying out the attack |
An MP says she will appeal to Parliament on behalf of a Liverpool football fan jailed in Bulgaria for the attempted murder of a barman. Michael Shields, 19, of Wavertree, has denied carrying out the attack on Martin Georgiev in Varna in May.
Another man, Graham Sankey, of Anfield, has signed a confession but this was not accepted by the Bulgarian court.
Louise Ellman, Liverpool Riverside MP, was due to mount a debate on his case in the House of Commons on Thursday.
Shields, who was convicted in July, was on holiday in the Black Sea resort after watching Liverpool beat AC Milan at the Champions League Final in Istanbul.
He says he was asleep in bed at the time when Mr Georgiev was attacked.
But the court rejected his claim, and found him guilty of hitting the barman on the head with a rock.
An appeal to reduce his sentence failed earlier this month, but the court reduced his 70,000 fine to 42,000.
A further appeal is pending at the Supreme Court in Sofia.
Mrs Ellman said: "There could be a grave miscarriage of justice here.
"Michael has claimed his innocence throughout and the fact that he said he was in bed at the time has been supported by the hotel porter.
"I understand that the British Government cannot intervene in the judicial process, but I hope the court will have the chance to examine all the available evidence."
