Michael Shields said he was "frustrated" at newspaper reports |
A teenager who is in a Bulgarian prison for a crime he says he did not commit has been speaking of his frustration that he is not being believed. Michael Shields, 18, of Wavertree in Liverpool, was convicted last month of the attempted murder of barman Martin Georgiev who was hurt in a bar brawl.
Graham Sankey, 20, of Anfield in Liverpool, has admitted the attack.
Shields told the BBC he was frustrated that the Bulgarian authorities had not checked Mr Sankey's confession.
"It's mad thinking that while the confessions come out over in England, the newspapers and the people here are making excuses up, like, oh it's Michael's friend and that's why he's saying it," he said.
Mr Georgiev suffered head injuries |
"It's just frustrating knowing that no-one would have checked it here but in England they have." Shields maintains he was in bed when a paving slab was thrown at Mr Georgiev in a bar in the Black Sea resort of Varna.
He had travelled there for a holiday after watching Liverpool win the European Champions League in Turkey in May.
His legal team has lodged an appeal against his sentence.
