Michael Shields said he was in bed when the barman was attacked |
The family of jailed Liverpool football fan Michael Shields are to deliver new evidence to his Bulgarian legal team. Shields was jailed in July for the attempted murder of a barman in the resort of Varna after the court heard he dropped a paving slab on his head.
A new witness has come forward saying Shields, 18, of Wavertree, did not carry out the attack.
Another man, Graham Sankey, 20, has confessed to the attack but this was not accepted by the Bulgarian court.
Shields' family were due to fly out to Bulgaria on Wednesday to deliver the witness statement to his legal team.
It follows an appeal by a local councillor in a newspaper for witnesses to come forward.
The Shields family hope the new evidence will help Michael's case.
He had flown to the resort after watching Liverpool's Champions League Final victory in Istanbul in May.
He said he was in bed when barman Martin Georgiev was attacked.
