Fare dodgers face instant fines
Merseyrail sign
About 30m passengers use Merseyrail each year
People who travel on Merseyside's rail network without a ticket will be given on-the-spot fines in a new crackdown.

Anyone caught travelling on Merseyrail without a ticket from Monday, will be issued with a 10 penalty fare.

The scheme aims to improve security at stations after research showed fare dodgers are more likely to commit vandalism or attack staff.

Passengers travelling on the Northern and Wirral lines must now buy a ticket for the entire journey before boarding.

Anyone found without a valid ticket will have to pay a fine, as well as the fare to their destination if they wish to complete their journey.

Merseyrail, which has 30m passengers a year, say the money will be used to improve security across the network, including the installation of electronic barriers and the increased use of security guards.
