It is proposed the trams will run from Liverpool's waterfront
The date for a public inquiry into plans for a tram line on Merseyside has been set.

The hearing will start on 20 April and is expected to last a month.

It will look at all aspects of the proposals for the 225m development - and will hear any concerns or objections to the plans.

The idea is to build a tram network which will run from the city centre.

The first stage of the development should begin later this year, if the inquiry gives it the green light.

Merseytram is being developed by Merseytravel, the body which co-ordinates the city's public transport system.

Bidding shortlist

The first stage of the development - Line One - will go out through Tuebrook towards Kirkby.

It is hoped Line One will be completed by 2007.

Merseytravel is also looking at three bids from a shortlist of five for the contract to build the network.

One of the latest bids to be submitted is a joint one between Mitsubishi and Serco Nedrail - the company which runs the Merseyrail network.

A decision will be made next month on which company to choose.

Merseytravel is also asking the government to part fund a second line which would run from Liverpool to Prescot.
