Boys sentenced for traveller killing
Johnny Delaney

Two teenagers who kicked and stamped a 15-year-old traveller to death, have each been sentenced to four-and-a-half years detention.

Louis McVey and Ricky Kearney, who are both 16 and from Ellesmere Port, were found guilty of the manslaughter of Johnny Delaney in November.

Johnny, a member of a travelling Irish family, was kicked about the head after an altercation between his friends and a group of teenagers in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, in May.

On Friday, a judge at Chester Crown Court lifted a ban on reporting their identities as a deterrent.

The judge said this was a very serious case and that Johnny Delaney was a popular boy whose death has caused a great loss, not only in his family, but in the wider travelling community.

His family expressed disgust at what they described as a lenient sentence.

Patrick Delaney
Johnny's father, Patrick, said he had been "to hell and back"
His father, Patrick Delaney, said: "They kicked my son to death - I couldn't bury him for six months, and I've been to hell and back, I can assure you of that."

The judge said he did not think the attack was racially-motivated as nothing was said before the attack happened.

But the court heard after the attack someone said Johnny deserved it "because he was a gypsy."

The judge could not increase the sentences for racial aggravation as he was unsure who had made the racist comment.

The Chief Constable of Cheshire Police, Peter Fahy, said they were aware of underlying tensions between people in Ellesmere Port and the travelling communuity.

Cheshire Education Authority plan to start a scheme named after Johnny Delaney, to try to educate the community about travellers.
