Airport pay talks resume
Liverpool John Lennon Airport
Wage cuts are planned for about a third of staff
Unions representing baggage handlers at Liverpool's airport are meeting management again in their dispute over pay.

The unions insist a 40% pay cut for some staff at Liverpool John Lennon Airport is unacceptable.

A revised pay offer was rejected by staff last week, but representatives from the airport say both parties were resuming talks on Tuesday on amicable terms.

About 120 staff at the airport walked out at 1900 GMT last Monday in the first of three proposed five-day strikes.

The handlers are striking over a plan which means many of them are facing a pay cut of 40%.

The airport says it needs to cut costs to remain competitive and under EU rules the airport has to open its baggage handling operation to competition.

It says it has reviewed the service and wants to regulate salaries.

For most staff that means their salary will increase or stay the same, and more staff will be taken on, but up to a third are facing the cuts.
