Morrissey played at the first concert at the G-Mex

The G-Mex, which hosted this year's Labour Party conference, will be rebranded as Manchester Central Convention Complex from 1 January.

The former train station featured Morrissey with The Smiths at its first music concert more than 20 years ago.

As well as hosting numerous concerts, it has also served as a sporting venue.

The site originally served as Manchester's third rail terminus, Central Station, from 1876 until the late 1960s when it was ruled surplus to requirements.

The Victorian train hall was transformed into the exhibition and event centre and was officially opened by the Queen on 21 March, 1986.

Morrissey performed with his band The Smiths at the G-Mex's first concert, the Festival Of The 10th Summer later that year.

It was a celebration of Manchester musicians.

Manchester-born Morrissey, 47, will perform at the centre on Friday and Saturday nights.
